The confetti throw is one of the most fun and Instagram-worthy moments at a wedding. It’s that magical scene where love is literally in the air, and it’s a favourite for myself and guests not just the couple. However, getting it just right takes a bit of planning. Whether you’re the couple, or part of the wedding party, here are some tips and tricks to ensure your confetti moment is absolutely perfect. It's also more than likely the guests first interaction with me, your photographer, so I try and make it as smooth and fun as possible.

Calculate the Right Amount of Confetti

First things first: let’s talk about the confetti itself. You want to ensure there’s enough confetti for every guest to get a good handful, maybe even 2 handfuls if you're really committed to the cause. (ANOTHER THING, if your guests have 2 handfuls they can't have their phone in their hand haha) A good rule of thumb is to have 1 litre of confetti per 12 guests. This ensures that everyone gets a handful to throw, creating that beautiful cascade effect without overdoing it.

Ditch the Bags and Cones: Go for Baskets

We’ve all seen the cute little bags or cones filled with confetti, but let’s be real – they can be a hassle. People fumble with them, some get more confetti than others, and it can mean they then have rubbish to hold during drinks reception which is never a vibe. Instead, put all the confetti in two large baskets.

You can pick up a cute couple of baskets from a charity shop or b&m or even just use ones you already have around the house. It's not only hassle free it can also be sustainable and reusable asset which is always a winner.

Designate two members of the wedding party to hand out the confetti once your photographer has got everyone in their place and also done their "how to" spiel. This way, everyone can grab a handful easily, ensuring an even distribution and a more coordinated throw.

Keep Your Head Up and Smile

When it’s time for the confetti toss, it’s easy to feel like ducking your head down or closing your eyes, but resist the urge! Confetti doesn’t hurt, and the key to great photos is keeping your head up, smiling, and enjoying the moment. Look at each other or out into the crowd, and let your happiness shine through. The confetti is fun, so embrace it!

Take It Slow: Walk, Don’t Run

It’s tempting to rush through the confetti tunnel, especially when you’re excited and overwhelmed by the cheers and the flying colours. But for the best photos, take your time. Walk slowly, soak in the moment, and let the photographers capture the full range of emotions and colours. This slower pace also gives guests more time to toss the confetti, creating a longer-lasting effect in your photos!

Hold Hands and Stay Close

Walking together through the confetti shower can feel chaotic, but staying close and holding hands can ground you in the moment. It’s also a beautiful visual for photos – the newlyweds walking hand in hand, through a shower of love and celebration. It creates a sense of intimacy and connection that shines through in every shot.

Kiss Halfway Down and at the End

A well-timed kiss can elevate the confetti moment from great to unforgettable. Plan to kiss about halfway down the confetti tunnel. This gives the photographers a perfect opportunity to capture a romantic moment amidst the falling confetti. Then, as you reach the end of the tunnel, go for another kiss – this time celebrating that you made it through the cascade of love, surrounded by your closest friends and family.
