As a wedding photographer, one of the most common concerns I hear from couples leading up to their big day is, “What if it rains?” Understandably, you’ve imagined every part of your wedding, from the sun shining brightly as you walk down the aisle to the perfect glow on your skin during those outdoor photos. Lets face it when you're getting married in the U.K rain on your wedding day can be very likely. Did you know that it rains on average 159 days a year in the U.K. But don't worry 'cause it can create some of the most breathtaking, intimate, and memorable moments that you wouldn’t get on a perfectly sunny day.

I Always Come Prepared – Umbrellas for Everyone!

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that a little preparation goes a long way. That’s why I always keep see-through umbrellas in the boot of my car, not just for you, but for your entire wedding gang and even the guests if people are willing to share. These clear umbrellas are lifesavers for a few reasons:

  • They’re transparent, so they won’t block the light or distract from your gorgeous dress and suit.
  • They add a romantic, whimsical touch to the photos.
  • Best of all, they keep everyone dry and smiling!

Whether it’s a light drizzle or a full-on rain shower, we’re not letting a little weather dampen the day. In fact, I have a umbrella hat, so that gets all the guests laughing when they see me in that.

Rain Makes for the Most Beautiful and Moving Photographs

Believe it or not, some of the most stunning wedding photos I’ve taken have been during or just after a rainfall. Here’s why:

Soft, Dreamy Light

Rain creates a soft, diffused light that’s perfect for photographs. No harsh shadows, no squinting into the sun—just a lovely, flattering glow. It adds a level of softness to your photos that sunny days simply can’t match. That misty, romantic feel? That’s all thanks to the rain.

Reflections and Unique Backgrounds

Puddles on the ground? They’re perfect for capturing artistic reflections of lights which can add warmth to photo's.

Emotional Moments

There’s something about rain that brings people closer—literally and figuratively. Whether it’s your partner brushing raindrops off your cheek or the two of you huddling together under an umbrella, these moments are genuine and raw. They make for moving, storytelling photographs that truly capture the bond between you on this special day.

Your Guests Will Stick Around – And That’s a Good Thing!

One of the unsung advantages of a rainy wedding day is that your guests will be more inclined to stick together. Rain tends to keep people indoors or under cover, which naturally brings everyone closer together. From a photographer’s perspective, this is gold! It means your guests aren’t wandering off to different corners, but are more likely to engage with one another and with you.

This creates the perfect environment for candid photography. I can capture all those genuine smiles, belly laughs, and heartwarming moments that make the reception so memorable. With everyone staying cozy in one place, there are plenty of opportunities to snap those little interactions.

Making the Most of the Rain: A Unique Wedding Story

Instead of seeing rain as an obstacle, embrace it. You can't change or control it. It’s these little “imperfections” that actually make your day perfectly unique. After all, how many couples can say they danced in the rain on their wedding day? The rain adds an extra layer of beauty, spontaneity, and magic that no amount of planning can replicate.

So, next time you worry about the forecast, remember: I’ve got the umbrellas ready, the raindrops make your photos magical, and your guests will be right where we need them to capture every candid smile. Let the weather be part of your love story, and trust me—those rainy wedding photos will be some of your absolute favourites!
